Custom PL mount for Canon CN-E
A PL mount built to measure for a set of Canon CN-E lenses: bringing them into a cinema workflow built around a PL camera body.
For this set of Canon CN-E lenses we carried out a conversion from EF mount to PL.
Before any work began, each lens was inspected thoroughly to check its collimation and rule out fungus, haze, aberrations or separation of the internal elements. Only then did disassembly start: removing the original EF mount and the base it sits on, followed by disconnecting the entire LDS and electronic block — done without any permanent alteration, so that full functionality and reversibility are preserved.
The measurements taken from the original part gave us the reference for the CAD drawing of the new base and PL mount, designed to fit every lens in the set. The design was validated in house through 3D printing and prototyping, with iterative changes to dimensions and tolerances until the geometry was right. The final files then went out for CNC machining: an anodised aluminium base and a PL mount in SUS 303 stainless steel, for dimensional precision and long-term durability.
When the machined parts came back, every lens was fully reassembled, checking that all mechanical parts ran smoothly and without play. To close the job, each lens was individually recollimated before shipping back to the client.
The result is a set of Canon CN-E lenses converted to PL mount, with mechanical components designed to measure and built for the demands of a film set.
