It is an increasingly common practice — and for good reasons. Vintage photographic lenses have a visual character of their own, cost far less than the cine equivalents, and in the right hands can give extraordinary results. But adapting them to a cinema camera body is not always as simple as it looks.
Why use photographic lenses on a cine camera
The main reason is the look. Vintage photographic lenses — Zeiss Contax, Leica R, Olympus OM, Canon FD, Nikon AI, to name the most used — have aberrations, bokeh rendering and optical characteristics that modern cine glass does not replicate. Plenty of DPs seek them out for exactly that: to get an image that does not look "too clean".
The second reason is cost. A set of vintage photographic lenses adapted to PL or LPL costs a fraction of an equivalent native cine set.
What adapting a mount actually means
Adapting a photographic lens to a cine camera does not simply mean fitting an adapter ring. It means checking that the flange focal distance of the new mount is right to a tenth of a millimetre, that the lens reaches infinity on the new body, that collimation is accurate, and that the mount is mechanically stable — no play, no movement, no back focus drift while you are shooting.
A cheap adapter ring bought online can work in some cases, but it rarely guarantees the tolerances professional use demands. On set, a mount that works badly translates into unstable focus, back focus drift and lost sharpness — often hard to diagnose in real time.
When a custom mount makes sense
A mount made to measure makes sense when the lens will be used professionally and continuously. When mechanical tolerances have to hold over time. When you want features a standard adapter does not offer — focus rings with a standard 0.8 module pitch, custom markings, specific locking systems.
It also makes sense when working with large format lenses, or with camera bodies that need non-standard mounts for which no adequate commercial solution exists.
What not to do
DIY is risky in this field. Modifying a mount without the right instruments can damage the lens permanently, throw collimation off irreversibly, or create mechanical problems that are hard to correct later. Getting the mount wrong on a valuable lens can cost more than having a professional custom mount made in the first place.
